However, the biggest challenge with this fruit is a specific kind of fungus that causes it to rot\u2014but not anymore. Indian researchers have identified a gene in pineapple that can protect the fruit from destructive fungal attacks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"750\">One of the major threats to pineapple cultivation is a disease called <em data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"548\">Fusariosis<\/em>, caused by the aggressive fungus <em data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"604\">Fusarium moniliforme<\/em>. This fungus deforms the plant&#8217;s stem, blackens its leaves, and causes the fruit to rot from within, leading to significant losses for farmers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"1298\">Scientists from the Bose Institute\u2014an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology\u2014have identified the gene behind <em data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"936\">Somatic Embryogenesis Receptor Kinase (SERK)<\/em>, which can activate the plant\u2019s collective immune response against diseases. Professor Gaurav Gangopadhyay, along with his PhD student Dr. Soumili Pal, enhanced this gene in pineapple plants.
