Samastipur (PB): For centuries, India has preserved its unique traditions, which form the essence of its culture and offer the world a distinct experience. One such tradition can be seen at Sindhiya Ghat in the Vibhutipur block of Samastipur district, Bihar. Every year, on the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami, a unique and fascinating snake fair is organized here. This year was no exception.
At Sindhiya Ghat, this extraordinary and rare snake fair is held on Nag Panchami, drawing what seems like a flood of visitors. In this fair, snakes are worshipped and displayed publicly as part of age-old rituals. The tradition begins with formal worship and offerings at the Maa Bhagwati Temple located in the Singhia Bazaar on Nag Panchami day. After the worship, a ceremonial procession accompanied by drums, mridangams, and other traditional instruments proceeds to Sindhiya Ghat. There, devotees offer prayers, and snakes are showcased for public viewing, attracting people from distant places.
Priest Shriram Singh explained that the fair has been held continuously for nearly 200 years. It is considered one of the oldest and most unique fairs related to snakes in India. It is believed that any devotee who comes here to worship the serpent deity (Nagdevta) has their wishes fulfilled and attains spiritual enlightenment.
Devotees say that attending this fair gives them a profound spiritual experience, and participating in this tradition on Nag Panchami is a symbol of their religious devotion. This fair attracts not only people from Bihar but also large crowds from other states like Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bengal.
