Dharali cloudburst : Uttarkashi, August 05, 2025: Who knew that nature, which was once so kind to the beautiful town of Dharali, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas just three to four kilometers from Harshil, would suddenly become so wrathful? In the morning, life was thriving, but by afternoon, a mournful cry echoed through the valley. The struggle was simply to survive. The two pictures above bear witness to how everything changed in a moment. The scene was such that people watching from a distance were blowing whistles and shouting in an attempt to save lives from the surging waters.
This form of nature is not new to the mountains of Uttarakhand. There is a long list of such disasters, from Budha Kedar in Tehri to Malpa in Pithoragarh and the Kedarnath tragedy, where thousands of people have lost their lives. This time it was repeated in Dharali. The flood in the Kheer Ganga river was like a tsunami in the ocean. People standing on the mountain captured the scene on their cameras, while also trying to alert the unfortunate ones who were about to be caught in it by whistling and shouting. It is not known whether these alarming sounds reached their ears or not.
About two hundred years ago, in 1815, Scottish traveler James Baillie Fraser mentioned a beautiful stopover in his travelogue, ‘Journal of a Tour Through Part of the Snowing Range of the Himala Mountains’. It is said that this stopover was Dharali. Since then, not much had changed in Dharali until now, but in an instant, nature completely changed the entire geography.
