Power of Photography : The Enduring Power of Photography: From History to AI’s Future
(Wildlife photographer Raju Pushola reflects on the journey of photography on International Photography Day)
Power of Photography : Dehradun, August 19, 2025: Words can sometimes deceive, but pictures never do. Photography is that powerful medium which immortalizes a fleeting moment in time. From the annals of history to personal memories, from battlefields to wedding halls—photography is ubiquitous, constantly shaping society. The mobile revolution has turned everyone into a photographer, and in this age of social media, taking photos has become a part of daily life. Be it moments of sorrow or joy, reunions or farewells, these captured moments in the camera always remain vibrant, keeping the memories alive.
The journey of photography is over two hundred years long. From the first permanent photograph taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in France in 1826 to today’s high-definition DSLRs, it symbolizes a remarkable technological revolution. In 1839, Louis Daguerre’s daguerreotype technique laid the foundation for modern photography. In the 19th century, cameras were primarily associated with the status of the wealthy and scientific research. The 20th century brought photography to the masses, and it carved out its own distinct identity in journalism, art, and advertising. But the real transformation came with the digital age, which put photography literally in everyone’s hands. Freed from complexities, the entire process became as simple as a ‘click’. Now, in the form of mobile phones, a camera is in every pocket, every moment, making every instant of life memorable.
Social media further accelerated this change. Today, photos shared on Instagram have become a medium of identity and expression for millions. A family photo album holds as much value as any historical document. Pictures are also accurate witnesses to history. From the Vietnam War to the recent climate crisis, photographs have swayed public opinion and driven change.
The journey of photography and cameras has been extraordinary. From film rolls to digital sensors. From heavy cameras to smartphones that fit in your pocket. From developing photos in a darkroom to editing software and AI-generated images. The ever-evolving technology has brought photography to a new pinnacle today. Now, photography is not just an art, but also a business and an industry. In the wedding, fashion, tourism, food, product, event, and media industries, photography is a multi-billion dollar business today.
Experts believe that in the coming times, photography will become even more advanced. AI-powered cameras will automatically enhance pictures. Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D imaging will place the viewer inside the photograph. Drones and robotic cameras will offer new perspectives. Holographic images might not just be seen, but also felt.
Photography is not just a world beyond the lens; it is an expression of our time, society, and emotions. It is art, science, business, and above all, a medium of communication that needs no language. History bears witness to its power, and the future is ready to write its new chapters.
