Gauri Kund landslide : Gauri Kund Landslide Halts Kedarnath Yatra 2025 | Road Destroyed
Gauri Kund landslide : Rudraprayag, July 30, 2025: A significant portion, estimated to be 50 to 70 meters, of the road near Gauri Kund has been completely destroyed by a massive landslide. The old pedestrian path is also damaged, and agencies are actively seeking an alternative route.
The critical route between Gauri Kund and Sonprayag, key stopovers for the Kedarnath Dham pilgrimage, was entirely blocked due to a severe landslide that occurred amidst continuous rain since Tuesday evening. Consequently, the Kedarnath Yatra has been suspended for now.
Hundreds of pilgrims are currently stranded in Gauri Kund and along the Kedarnath pedestrian route due to the debris. SDRF teams are working to safely evacuate these travelers, and possibilities for alternative pedestrian routes are being explored. Adding to the challenges, debris continues to fall intermittently from the hillside.
According to the police, the road was closed last evening, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Gauri Kund towards Sonprayag, when boulders, mud, and stones fell onto the road from the hill. Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police, Akshay Prahlad Konde, stated that about 50 to 70 meters of the road between Munkatiya and Gauri Kund have been destroyed. He added that the alternative pedestrian path for this section is also broken.
It’s estimated that it will take two to three days for this route to be cleared. Superintendent Konde has appealed to pilgrims heading for the Kedarnath Dham Yatra to consider visiting other religious sites during this period. Information regarding the road’s reopening will be shared via the Rudraprayag district police’s social media cell. He further mentioned that operations are underway to evacuate pilgrims stranded towards Gauri Kund. SDRF and NDRF teams are actively exploring the possibility of a pedestrian path through the forests to establish an alternative route and safely bring stranded pilgrims from Gauri Kund towards Sonprayag.
